By focusing on Women of the West\, we hope to paint a broader view of the rich history of the Panhandle-Plains and the West. The Women of the West exhibition series includes: American Indian Art" from the Susan J. Allen Collection\, Gems of the Plains\, "Girls of the Golden West" Photograph Exhibition\, Olive Vandruff: Artist of the American West\, Madonnas of the Prairie: Depictions of Women in the American West and "Anna Keener: Southwestern Regionalist." This program is made possible in part by a grant from Humanities Texas\, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.\n\n \n\nCurrently open and running through September 6\, 2014\, American Indian Art from the Susan Janney Allen Collection showcases some of the 2\,000 plus American Indian cultural artifacts and art objects included in the Panhandle-Plains Historical Society's Susan Janney Allen Collection. Using clothing and textiles from the Panhandle-Plains Historical Society's permanent collection\, High Fashion on the High Plains will take a look at two centuries worth of women's fashions. High Fashion will open on February 1 and run through January 3\, 2015. \n\n \n\nUsing words\, images\, artifacts\, and audio recordings\, Gems of the Plains will be an introspective look at Panhandle-Plains women who successfully met a variety of challenges head on. "Girls of the Golden West": Photographs from the Permanent Collection will present images that paint a story of the often overlooked diversity present in the early Panhandle-Plains region. Also drawn from the Panhandle-Plains Historical Society's permanent collection\, Olive Vandruff: Artist of the American West will showcase the diverse skills of this artist and former PPHM Curator of Art. All three exhibitions run March 1\, 2014 February 7\, 2015.\n\n \n\nMadonnas of the Prairie will use the PPHM permanent collection\, as well as public and private collections\, to give visitors a broad spectrum of artists' depictions of Western women from the 19th and 20th centuries. Many artists\, including some old favorites and some not so familiar\, will be represented. Madonnas will be open from April 12 August 30\, 2014. This program is made possible in part by a grant from Humanities Texas\, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.\n\n \n\nLike all history\, the story of the women of the West is as complex and varied as the people who lived it. We are pleased to present a small part of that story and hope that it will stimulate thought about the women who helped us get where we are today.\n\n \n\nMore information about each of these exhibitions can be found online at panhandleplains.org. \n\n \n\nABOUT PPHM\n\n \n\nLocated on the campus of West Texas A&M University\, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum is the largest history museum in Texas\, with more than 285\,000 square feet and over two million artifacts dedicated to preserving this area's past.
